Time & Tide Bell

Time & Tide Bell
The Jetty, Aberdovey

Aberdovey’s Time & Tide bell celebrates the Welsh legend of the submerged kingdom of Cantre’r Gwaelod beneath Cardigan Bay, whose bells, it is said, can be heard ringing beneath the surface.

Our bell is unique, one of only 12, each one different in design, to be installed around the UK. It acts as time-piece or time marker – the bell being rung by the movement of the sea at high tide each day. The idea of the Time & Tide Bell is the inspiration of Marcus Vergette, a sculptor, film-maker, composer and musician. The bell will serve as a long-term marker of the sea levels and indicate to us the current position of the shoreline.

The bell is located on the wharf’s wooden jetty and the information plaque celebrating the installation, overlooking the bell, can be found at the rear of Aberdovey Yacht Club.
