Aberdovey’s Centre of Culture

Social life in any community is always important, and in a small village it is even more so. The close proximity of people living and working together means more sharing, more caring and, indeed, more socialising than in a large town or city. This has certainly been the case in Aberdovey, where the community has always been glad to come together for a festival or celebration.

During the early years of the 20th Century the village of Aberdovey was growing fast and there was a growing need for a public place suitable for social events such as concerts, music competitions and public meetings. As a temporary measure these were held in chapel vestries and the village school, but it was soon realised that a much larger, and more permanent, building was needed.

In 1957 the new hall, the Neuadd Dyfi was opened with a Civic Ceremony and a ceremonial concert, at which local artists, young and old, took part, and a Pageant of Youth, arranged by Aberdyfi Primary School staff.

The Neuadd Dyfi in the 21st century has since developed into a cultural and social venue respected and admired in equal measure across Wales. It is the home of the now famous Aberdyfi Players and plays host to exhibitions, conferences large and small, travelling theatre productions, village social events, and wedding/banquet events throughout the year.
