Local Hero Joe Doherty

In November 2018, Joe Doherty, an Aberdovey Outward Bound instructor, started his adventure to become the very first scout to ski to the South Pole and return under wind power.

Joe spent 61 days hauling food and essential life saving equipment across a staggering 2045km of Antarctic wilderness. With average temperatures falling below -28C any problems or mistakes could prove fatal.

The epic voyage started from the Messner, which is on the Edge of the Antarctic Plateau. His journey on skis covered 566 miles to the Geographic South Pole before returning the 700 miles by kite ski to the

Hercules Inlet at the southern tip of the Ronne Ice Shelf.

On January 24 2019, the test of endurance was successfully completed. Antarctica threw all it could at him: extreme cold, horrendous winds, complete whiteouts and horrible terrain. But it also kindly allowed him to complete this expedition with sheer grit and determination.

As a member of the Outward Bound Trust in Aberdovey, Joe followed the famous mantra of the Trust’s Founder, Kurt Hahn: “We are all better than we know. If we could only be made to realise this we may never be willing to settle for anything led again.”
